Directory Registration / Directory Submission

> Skip to “What are Directories?”

Directory Registration (as we like to call it) or Directory Submission (as others typically call it) is a great way to publicly introduce your website on the internet.  Registering your website with relevant, high-quality online directories helps generate traffic and build links to your site.

Google even recommends registering your site with trusted directories:

Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites.

That’s pretty much what this service is all about.  There are alot of directories out there, however.  Knowing which ones are worth your time and in some cases your money (many charge submission or review fees) is not easy if you don’t have experience and familiarity with the directories.  That said, this service isn’t rocket science either.

For your money you get

  • our knowledge of which directories to submit to, and which are worth the cost of admission
  • our writing services to craft your listings and site description for the various directories
  • our time manually submitting to these directories
  • all submission fees included in our charge to you

Wait, What Exactly are Directories?  Are they Search Engines?

No, they are not search engines.  Search engines go out and find your website, search through it and save its contents to their database.  When someone uses a search engine they match the contents in their database to the search query.

Directories don’t gather or store anything from your site.  They are more like a Yellow Pages or phone directory.  Directories group websites into categories (whether its a general or industry-specific/vertical directory) and then have short descriptions about each site.  In some cases there is more information such as reviews, etc.  In some cases not.

Directories are more of an alternative to using search engines to navigate the web.  They are a great way to find high-quality sites, as most decent directories have some human review element.  That’s typically why they charge a fee, a real person must review and approve the site before its listed.  The search engines like to piggy-back off of this.  If they see a site listed in a trusted directory than they know a person, presumably with some level of standards, approved the site.  That has value, since its not practical for the major search engines to manually review the 10 billion plus web pages on the internet right now.
