SEO / Pages Indexed & Inbound Link Search Queries

The following are some search commands to use in Yahoo! to help you understand who is linking to your website.  The quantity and quality (reputation and context) of “inbound links” pointing to your website is a factor in how well your website is regarded by the major search engines.

The commands given below are the queries you should use – i.e. the words you type into the search box.  Be anal – don’t miss a space or a colon or it may not work correctly.

Pages Indexed Search Commands

Pages Indexed – Google

site:yoursite.com

Pages Indexed – Yahoo

site:yoursite.com

Pages Indexed – MSN

site:yoursite.com

Inbound Link Search Commands

Total Links to Your Site – Yahoo

linkdomain:yoursite.com

Total Inbound Links, Not Counting Your Own Site – Yahoo

linkdomain:yoursite.com -site:yoursite.com

Total Inbound Links from .gov Sites – Yahoo

linkdomain:yoursite.com site:.gov

Total Inbound Links from .edu Sites – Yahoo

linkdomain:yoursite.com site:.edu

Why Yahoo?

Google, Yahoo and MSN all allow you to query their database to find who is linking to a given site.  Generally we’ve found that Google shows a very, very conservative/understated number.  MSN tends to show a bit of an inflated number.  In our unscientific opinion, Yahoo provides the best data.

Other Notes

Do understand that these are not necessarily exact numbers, so don’t take them literally, but rather relatively.  Also, you are free to use “www.” in front of “website.com” as listed above.  Generally your results should be pretty close.  We recommend using whatever you use primarily for your site – either www. or not.
